Bushfire Shutters Blue Mountains

Tell us which windows and doors you want protected, and your enquiry reaches one local provider who measures up and quotes in writing. The NSW Rural Fire Service calls the Blue Mountains one of the most bush fire prone areas in the world; CSIRO says non-combustible shutters offer protection against flame contact, embers and strikes from flying objects. Neither says a shutter makes a house safe.

Four things to know first

  • Shutters are one part of the house CSIRO's Bushfire best practice guide names windows and doors as another vulnerable part of the house, and says non-combustible shutters protect against flame contact, embers and strikes from flying objects. It makes no claim that a shutter makes a house safe.
  • The RFS lists simple steps too The NSW Rural Fire Service lists installing fine metal mesh screens on windows and doors, fitting seals around doors and windows to eliminate gaps, and cleaning gutters among the ways to prepare a home.
  • A licence line applies over A$5,000 NSW requires a contractor licence for building or trade work valued above A$5,000 in labour and materials, GST included. Because NSW has no category for shutters, ask whoever quotes which licence the work is done under.
  • A plan is more than a shutter The RFS says a Neighbourhood Safer Place is a place of last resort, and that travelling to or sheltering at one does not guarantee your safety.

Three steps

From enquiry to quote

  1. Tell us about the house Say which windows and doors you want protected, what the house is made of, and whether you already know its BAL.
  2. It is passed on Your enquiry reaches one independent local provider who covers the Blue Mountains. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
  3. A provider inspects and quotes The provider measures the openings, then gives a written price for the work. That price is theirs to set.
